Apologies for the later than usual updating of some of the web site report features. With all the other news and intense activity this last week it has been difficult to find the necessary time.

Our judges this year, following the annual membership vote, were Steve Green of the Waldershelf Bernese (dogs) and Dave Denis of the Alpenblick kennel from Canada (bitches), a well known visitor to our shores. Just over 200 dogs were entered in the show and absentee levels were very low so our judges were kept busy. The weather held good all day and we were able to stay in the large outdoor rings. We thank everyone who entered, attended or otherwise supported our day and made it a memorable dog show day out. We also thank our sponsors Royal Canin.

Our show was visited by a Kennel Club Field Officer who gave us an "Excellent" rating. Strangely enough she had just asked us what we would do if someone collapsed in the ring and, within a minute or so, that's virtually what happened in the bitch ring. Thankfully June recovered and stayed the rest of the day. I don't think our official answer was, "leave her there and move into the next ring to carry on judging" but it seemed the right thing to do at the time!

The day commenced with another fantastic parade of carters and the club is extremely grateful to all the carters who took part in our spectacular opening.

For the second year running the Best in Show was the Veteran bitch winner, gaining her title on the day, having won her second the day before. I think we can safely say her owner was surprised and, once we'd picked her,up off the floor, delighted. So, its heartiest congratulations to  Lorraine Grayling and Champion Lujento Zeta Zuccini (subject to KC confirmation). The dog CC and Reserve Best in Show also went to the previous day's winner Int Nord, Fin, VDH Champion Sargas a.v. Milkcreek who had travelled all the way from Norway to attend the two shows.

The Reserve Dog CC went to Limit class winner Mrs Scobie's Torralbaz Dazzleon Days handled by his breeder Anne Gerrard and the Reserve bitch CC went to the Open class winner Champion Nelly Pledge. Best Puppy was Gerry Jones' and Jackie Carr's Markeila Little Gem.

Full results, reports and photos of winners will appear as soon as they become available so please consider this as very much a work in progress for some time to come and please keep coming back to it.

Results and Report of Bitch Judge

Firstly my thanks to the BMDC of GB for giving me the honour of judging bitches at  their Champ Show this past weekend.  Although not the first time I have judged here it is the first time for giving CC’s.  I was impressed by the quality of the bitches presented to me and by the courtesies shown me. Thanks also to my head steward Sandra Gatward and table steward Louise Baldwin for their invaluable assistance.

Dog Results

Dog Judging Results and Judge’s Report by Steve Green (Waldershelf)

Firstly, I have to record my sympathies to the owners of my Minor Puppy Dog class winner.  It is a sobering thought for me that being shown in this class was virtually the last thing he did and his subsequent fate puts the rest of my comments very much into perspective. I did not record any mention of lethargy or lack of animation so this demonstrates how quickly his condition must have taken effect. As I write several more incidences of illness appear to be being reported in young dogs and I sincerely hope that, partly thanks to the warnings the club put out, none of these have the same sad result.

Thank you to everyone in the club who voted me into this judging appointment and I hope everyone enjoyed it as I did. Thanks also to everyone who entered and to Karen, my marvellous steward, who managed brilliantly well on her own all day.

Four years since my last CC appointment and I have to say that, maybe partly because of the better entry at a club show, my impression was that dogs have improved a little. Still a real assortment in some classes and you almost feel you are judging Any Variety Bernese sometimes!

The sloping nature of the ring could have affected movement and I was not over hard on front movement of dogs running down the hill towards me. It was interesting, (and of course quite in order), to see some experienced exhibitors using the slope to their advantage, particularly whilst standing.

One general breed point I feel I ought to mention is tails, not the usual issue about them being carried high over the back, although there were a few of these, but short tails. Quite a few were shorter than, or barely making it to, the required “…….just below the hock”.  I feel it might be something to watch as a noticeably short tail would not be something desirable or enhancing for our breed. No one was especially punished for it today as other priorities decided things but this is not a trend I would like to see develop further.

My co-judge and I agreed on all our joint decisions

Results

Veteran Dog

Veteran Dog (4 entered, 3 present) 1] Shepherd and Nuttall’s Ch Monalou Thru n Thru. 8 yrs old very well made dog with strong head and good bone and short coupled giving compact shape with good proportions. Lovely kind expression and with good angulation front and back the best mover in the class maintaining good balance throughout. 2] Butcher’s Dundela Golden Shadow ShCm. At 10 years old the oldest in the class,  standing true from the front but shoulders a little forward placed. Longer type and with dippy topline but moving well enough. 3] Jones’ Bernolyn Beau Jester. Lovely 8 year old who I loved standing, presenting real strong type with good bone and pleasing shape but disappointed as he looked more than his age and very laboured on the move.

  Minor Puppy Dog

Minor Puppy Dog (4,4) Subsequent tragic events make this seem a superficial report  but with sympathies to all those concerned.... 1] Clark and Main’s Manisla Ebony Magic.  6½ months old with good pleasing compact shape with breadth throughout and benevolent expression with soft face and lovely dark eye.  Well angled shoulders and stifle and hocks well let down which enabled good, balanced movement for age.  2] Nightingale’s Manisla Ebony Dusk. Litter brother to 1 and caught my eye early on and with many of the virtues of his sibling.  Good size, with breadth and lots of potential. Better handling on the move would have helped his cause today.  3] Biggins’ Greybern Young Dude. 7 months today, taller and leggier type at the moment but still well made and could make a nice dog when his body catches up with his frame. 4] Sargent’s Ardenbridge Marshall at Sargbilko

 Puppy Dog

Puppy Dog (7,7) 1] Jones and Carr’s Kernow Cool Dude. Very mature for his 10½ months with lots of type, bone and general good size. Broad front although stood a little wide but straight but this did not show on the move. Overall shape and proportions OK but topline needs to level off to fulfil promise. Moved with drive and very well muscled at the rear.  2] Miles’ Jaybiem Hedging Her Bets. Another well grown for age, 9 months, and pushed very hard for 1st spot but just preferred the head of 1. Compact shape with deep chest and level topline, breadth throughout but with straight coat.  Well made front and rear and moved well aided by the usual excellent handling. Another with real promise. 3] Wakeland’s Jaybiem Cedar Trees at Bramikdel. 9 months old, smaller type than 1 & 2 but very well balanced and very correct on the move. Lovely head and expression and very clean markings. Stood a little straighter at the back. 4] Aze’s  Markeila Prince Kipling 5] Round’s Vellbern Samurai Warlord 6] Friend’s Collansues Prince Charming

Special Junior Dog

Special Junior Dog (4,3) 1] Bridge’s Fortonpark Its My Boy at Kernow. 14 month old with lovely overall shape and strong head without being overdone. Good bone throughout with genuine breadth and depth of chest and lovely well rounded rump. Strong, well muscled shoulders and rear quarters which gave real well balanced drive on the move. A real prospect. 2] King & Bramble’s Shirdees Jumping Jack. Almost 14 months and again a well boned dog although head a little over developed but still with really soft expression and manner aided by really dark eye. Broad and deep shape with strength and substance throughout but a little long and standing a little straight at the back. Not as good on the move as 1.  3] Aze’s  Markeila Prince Kipling. 9 month old smaller type with medium size and bone. Eyes a little loose. Stood well but a little unbalanced on the move.

 Junior Dog

Junior Dog (6, 5) 1] Gurney’s Monalou Dutch Courage. Pleasing 17 month old with good compact proportions presenting with level topline and deep chest although stands a little wide at the front. Dark marked with dark eye and lovely expression A very correct dog not exaggerated anywhere with good angulation front and rear. Short coupled, well boned for size and moved with drive and balance, certainly one to watch.  2] Embleton’s Ir Ch Bernemcourt Sirocco. Another 17 month old with real qualities but just losing out today. Good head and expression, slightly longer body shape but with deep chest and again very well made front and rear. Maintained level top line standing and moving and another very balanced mover. Very close and a difficult decision between 1 & 2 but just preferred the overall shape of my winner 3] Wort’s Shirdees Mr Jingles.  14 months old and very much at an adolescent “gawky teenager” stage and a little long on shape with medium bone. Good head but expression spoilt a little by overdeveloped flews. Well angled shoulders and well made at the rear and moving well enough. Will make a decent dog if he matures into his frame over the next few years. Another who needs time. 4] Rumble’s Monalou Touch of Dutch to Glenbrienz 5] Avery’s Kyleburn Night Quintillon

Yearling Dog

Yearling Dog (8,8) 1] Harrington’s Ardenbridge Fordson JW. 22 months old good, solid type with strong, broad head on broad, strong body with real depth of chest and breadth throughout. Well made in shoulder and rear quarters presenting well defined angulation. Moving well and with balanced co-ordinated drive. Top line needs to settle to complete picture as he matures.  2] Benson’s Kinelarty Midnight Star Gaze. 22 months, big tall boy with strong head and pleasing expression. Good bone and decent shaped outline with level topline and pleasing and correctly rounded rump. Presenting with better angulation at the front than the rear but overall carried his big frame very well on the move. With a couple of years more maturity he could make a really nice dog. Hopefully, a demonstration of the “slow to mature” phrase in our standard. 3] Cotton’s Collansues Special Dreamer. Good sized dog with medium bone for size and good deep chest. Strong head and expression but not quite presenting a balanced appearance. Moved OK.  4] Marsden & Robertson’s Trudaleaze Fantaztyk Storm 5] Butler’s Vellbern I Haven’t Done it. 6] Wells’ Glanzberg Viscount

Novice Dog

Novice Dog (7,7) 1] Smith’s Cotesbach Superhero from Bernshire. Good sized dog with pleasing overall appearance although tan a little light.  Head strong without being overdone and correct expression. Stood nicely with decent shoulder placement and good level topline. Very well muscled thighs and this showed on the move with drive from the rear. 2] Marsden & Robertson’s Trudaleaze Fantaztyk Storm. More balanced overall with good compact, but smaller, shape with dark markings. Stood well with good shoulders and compact shape. More settled on the move than in previous class. 3] Wort’s Shirdees Mr Jingles (see previous). 4] Aze’s  Markeila Prince Kipling 5] Butler’s Vellbern I Haven’t Done it.6] Littlehidden Wood Warbler from Jaybiem

Graduate Dog (5,5) 1] Shaw’s Wildingwood Maximillian. Meduim sized dog of pleasing overall shape. Broad head with friendly expression, broad chest with well sprung ribs and level topline standing and maintained on the move. Well made shoulders but rather straight at the rear. Moved well enough.  2] Shepherd and Nuttall’s Monalou and All That Jazz. Pleasing overall proportions but slightly lacking width in head. Well made in shoulder and good depth to chest with good tuck up. Moved with balance and drive.  3] Sargent’s Ardenbridge Waldo at Sargbilko. Decent sized dog  with broad head and correct expression. Deep chest with level topline maintained during well balanced movement. 4] Scott’s Welshbern Supertouper of Scobern 5] Reeves’ Kernow Spring Swift

  Post Graduate Dog

Post Graduate (9, 9) 1] Titchmarsh’s Wardleyhill Beanoble. One of the easier decisions of the day. Impressive dog with everything in the right place. Terrific bone and substance throughout, strong, broad head with dark eye and kindly expression, and well proportioned body demonstrating real strength throughout. Stood true and square, good spring of rib and deep chest. Well made shoulders and level topline, and good angulation at the rear. Moved with correct movement and pushed very hard for Res CC but just has a little look of the slightly immature adolescent about him. Standard says “slow to mature” and, at almost 2½ years, he is a good example but should be well worth waiting for as he should do really well with a just little more maturity and “finish”. 2] Heslam’s Feorena Justin Credible Smaller type but with pleasing overall shape with deep chest and level topline. Strong head with kind expression enhanced by dark eye. Well laid back in shoulder but not so well angulated in rear quarters. However, well muscled front and rear and moved well.  3] Clark and Pickering & Creasey’s Alphanova Brother Bear. Heavier type than 2 with strong head but expression slightly marred by heavy eyes. Strong and broad in body with pleasing rounded rump. Moved well enough. 4] Sargent’s Oseman’s Percyverance at Sargbilko 5] Shaw’s Ridgewater Ebony Eyes 6] Cochrane & Brehaut’s Duntiblae Alter Ego

Mid Limit Dog

Mid Limit Dog (4, 4) 1] Atherton’s Feorena Loud ‘n’ Proud.  Good mid sized dog with genuine width and compact shape. Broad back and chest and with good shoulder angulation and standing well at the front but a little wide on the move.  Good rear quarters which gave drive from the rear.  2] Goodyear’s Harvestbank Achernar JW. Taller slimmer type with dark markings and friendly expression. Well made throughout and maintained balance on the move. Pleasing enough dog but lacking in width.  3] Riseborough’s Dolpena Celtic Memory of Moonbach. Well made dog, particularly at the front, which showed standing and on the move. Correctly made dog but lacks bone and substance  4] Scobie’s Monalou Mabel’s Magic

Limit dog

Limit Dog (12, 12) A good strong class with the first 3 particularly impressing. 1] Scobie’s Torralbaz Dazzleon Days Caught my eye in the class from the beginning and did not disappoint. Really pleasing proportions and clean markings. Attractive head with kind eye and correct expression. Stood with straight front and presenting strong well laid back shoulders, broad, deep chest with well muscled fore quarters. Completely level topline and rounded rear end. Exceptionally well made at the rear and in good condition which showed on the move. Tail carried a little high but overall a really pleasing dog who presented as a well rounded package today. Res CC 2] Sadler-Smith’s Cornwellian Galadriel at Pollingfold. A dog I have admired from the ringside who did not disappoint. Very pleasing overall proportions and good construction front and rear who could swap places with 1 on another day. Well balanced standing and moving. Dark marked with strong head and lovely dark eye and benevolent expression. Deep chest and rounded rump aid the overall picture and he did not disappoint on the move moving with reach and drive, one of the best movers of the day aided by his handling.  3] Bridges’ Ohso Special. Good sized dog with good bone and strength throughout, very pleasing shape with level topline and good angulation. Stood slightly wide at the front but this did not show on the move. A good dog possibly not at his best today. 4] Marsden & Robertson’s Arrambec Ambijian for Trudaleaze 5] Mead’s Monalou Shiver Me Timbers 6] Scott’s Welshbern Merl Bailie of Scobern

  Open Dog

Open Dog (12, 12) Certainly the strongest overall class I have ever judged with quality right down the line and several good dogs missing out altogether. Several positions could easily have been different and could change on another day. 1] Loken’s Int Nord, Fin, VDH Ch Sargas AV Milkcreek Lovely dog that just oozes class standing and moving. Above medium size with good bone and breadth giving pleasing general appearance. Extremely attractive head with lovely expression and correct dark eye. Good lay back of shoulder, excellent upper arm, deep chest and good tuck up combine with level topline to give excellent shape and well angulated and strong rear quarters complete the picture. Very well muscled and moving with an easy drive around the ring effortlessly showing good reach at the front and strong drive from the rear. Naturally freestanding back into perfect position giving another demonstration of his correct construction. Not quite in full coat today but a calm, relaxed demeanour completes the package and a worthy winner of a strong class and the CC.  2] Wells’ Ch Monalou Jess for Me At Bernfold.  Well made, medium sized dog who presents a complete package of an all round correct dog with no real faults and quite a bit going for him.  Well made front and rear and although he can appear a little stuffy in neck this is only due to coat. Pleasing shape with deep chest and decent bone for size. Moved with balance from front and rear and clinched his place on the move. 3] Gorbould’s Ch Dynamite van’t Beertjes Hof of Glanzberg. Another quality typey dog with strong head and well developed front combining with good overall shape with strength throughout. Particularly well made at the back and it showed on the move where he had real drive from his rear quarters. Could easily swap places with 2 on another day. 4] Bridges Ch Kernow Special Branch. 5] Cotton’s Ch Collansues Mexican Dream. 6] Thew’s Ch Bernsteph Versace at Bernmast.
