BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG CLUB OF GREAT BRITAIN
THE GARDEN PARTY, SUNDAY 20th MAY 2007
THE RESCUE PARADE
This has now become the traditional end to the morning’s events but the Rescue Parade was down in numbers this year. However, the Rescued dogs present received a warm welcome from the members. The club is really appreciative of all its Rescue owners as without them there would be no Rescue so this is about thanking them as much as showing off the dogs. Here are the comments written by the owners about each dog and read out to the audience as the dog paraded.
Millie aged 2 years Arrived with her new family 12 months ago, she was a bit poor in condition and very nervous. She wouldn’t leave Phil’s side for 6 weeks or more and stayed close even when off the lead in the middle of a field. She is now full of confidence and cheeky and has settled in really well with her new mates Scooby (Jack Russell) and Lady (the horse).
Jaz aged 6 came into Rescue because she apparently killed ducks but is no happily settled in her new home. She also had cruciate problems for which she was operated on and a life threatening Pyometra and had to be spayed. She is now a canine blood donor.
Monty aged 17 months was rehomed with his new family at just 5 months of age following a family break up. His speciality is Garden Makeovers!
Whilst a decent crowd was gathered the Carting Group took the chance to present the impressive Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for the overall top Working Dog on the Carting courses for 2006. The Gold medal winner was Murphy with Tom Murray, Silver was Henry with Roy Toms and Bronze Homer with Tom Murray.
The expected curtain raiser to the afternoon there was a decent turnout for this class and again, all of the dogs were well received by the audience. Just before the class the character assessors took advantage of the gathered throng to test their dogs in a noisy crowd scene and everyone was asked to get up and stand about and talk and clap for a couple of minutes whilst the dogs weaved through the hall. A good unexpected party game!
Golden Oldies looking their age - the dogs looked well though!!
Lynn Jones with Brodie aged 73/4 years. Brodie’s mum was Kernow Patience Rewarded. She has one CC and hhas produced Ch Bernolyn Its Beano Surprise. She is a very quiet and gentle girl who is happiest at home with her family.
Di Atherton with Otto. 7 year old Otto was born in Scotland sired by Di’s own Taz. He is a joy to live with being all character. He did well in the show ring being an Irish Champion and just missing out on his UK title. He has also sired one Champion out of only 3 litters.
Wendy Murray with 9½ year old Murphy. Murphy was best overall Working Dog 2006. He is a true gentleman and simply a joy to live with. He recently took part in the World’s biggest Dog recall at the All About Dogs event and will be in the Guiness book of records. He has now retired from the show ring getting 4th last year at Crufts and has won mnay Best Veterans at Champ shows… but you try stopping him from pulling his cart…… don’t think so!!
Keith Brown with Esme who is 7 years old and sweet, gentle and happy rolling on the grass and just being close to Keith and Sue. She has been shown and achieved the advanced carting level. She is such a sweetie and head of her doggie family.
Yvonne Fison-Bates with 10½ year old Finn. Finn travelled from New Zealand in a LARGE crate. Called the dog with 9 lives, Finn started at 10 months ramming into cars, (whilst Yvonne was in the UK). He took fright at a friend’s car and ran, caused $2,000+ worth of damage to cars. Unscathed insurance paid for 4 operations in 2 years. Beat That!
Pete & Wendy Garrard with Brig. Brig is 11 years and 2 months oldand retired from carting 2 years ago having been an advanced carter and part of the Midland Bernese Carters display team. He is a registered P.A.T. Dog and has represented the breed many times at Discover Dogs. His 15 seconds of fame were at Crufts a few years ago when Gaby Roslin picked him out on TV as the dog she wanted to take home.
Jean Hellingsworth with Susie who is 9 years old. Susie always had bad hips and had major surgery as a puppy and is held together by metal plates. She is known as stainless steel Susie. She is a very happy girl whose tail never stops wagging. Until recently she managed long walks but has slowed up a lot recently so just does what she wants nowadays. She is much loved by Bruce and Jean.
Jeanette Green (and helpers!) with Yndi. Yndi is an 8 year old bitch imported from Holland in 2002. She used to live mostly in a paddock and kennel with about 12 other Bernese and quickly decided she had moved to Bernese heaven in England, namely a house with a kitchen at both ends!! She is a Champion and was BIS at the GB club Champ Show last year and has won veteran at the last 3 GB club shows. She has a daughter and two 11 week old grandsons here today. Her father lived until nearly 11 and her mother was 13 years old so we hope to have her for a good few years yet.
Mr Wells with Shane. (Rough Collie) 13½ year old Shane is qualified for life at Crufts. He is the mascot for the Royal British Legion Downham Market and also an Honorary Member of the Red Arrows and the 8th Army (Desert Rats).
Lynne Jones with Jilly May aged 73/4. Jilly came to Lyn at 3 years old unpacked her baggage and stayed. She will have her puppy exuberance for life, even though she had cancer on her 6th birthday. She loves to dance and the A frame is her Agility Speciality, together with food of course. She is just loved completely and unconditionally.
The club is very grateful to the owners of the Golden Oldies and the Rescue Dogs for bringing them to our event and sharing their stories with us all and we thank everyone involved. We'd like to congratulate all the dogs and owners and very much hope to see everyone in these parades again next year.

OBEDIENCE
A big Thank You to all the competitors who worked your beautiful dogs in the Obedience Classes, every one of you handled your dogs with understanding and kindness, an absolute pleasure to judge.
I would also like to thank the Committee for inviting me to judge, and providing an excellent much appreciated lunch, and of course my steward of the day who kept things moving smoothly and especially for chasing everyone for their Stays, thanks Sandra.
HAVE A GO – OBEDIENCE
1ST MALINDI with Sue Small – A happy partnership with her handler only causing a few marks to be lost with a tight lead. Good Recall. Clear Stays, Well Done Malindi.
2nd WILLOW with Dave Biggins - This dog certainly enjoyed his round, only losing a few marks with a little inattention. Only just missed the higher place. Clear Stays and Good Recall, Well Done Willow.
3rd LEXI with Joan Meakin - This team worked really well only losing a couple of marks on heelwork. Unfortunately Lexi didn’t quite complete the Sit Stay which cost you a higher place. Lovely Recall, Well Done Lexi.
4th HARVEY with Philippa Green - Again a tight lead took away a higher place, by using your voice a bit more to keep Harvey’s attention will certainly keep you in the cards. Stays were clear, Well Done Harvey.
5th DIESEL with Lisa Kent - A young dog with the smartest sits of the day, such a pity that Diesel decided that the Down Stay was a little bit too long, otherwise an excellent round. Good Recall, Well Done Diesel.
6th SASHA with Linda Biggins - Sasha was enjoying her round so much she forgot how to Sit at the end. A lovely girl who just needs to listen to Mum a bit more. Clear Stays gave the marks she needed. Well Done Sasha.
TRIERS – OBEDIENCE
1st MALINDI with Sue Small – Excellent Round which got even better “Heel Free”. Just watch out for that occasional tight lead !! Perfect Recall and Clear Stays gave you this well deserved 1st Place. Keep up your Happy training. Well Done to Both of You.
2nd BRYN with Diane Crawshaw – Just a tight lead cost you marks today, using your happy voice more will speed Bryn up l’m sure. Very Good Recall – together with almost perfect Sit and Down Stay, Well Done Bryn.
3rd PIPER with Marcella Stephens – Her “continental” finish was certainly most impressive, Well Done Piper. A lack of concentration today, what a pity, being a little older than most in this class the warm weather gave her a good excuse to take it easy. Clear Stays gave her this well deserved 3rd place.
4th SASHA with Linda Biggins – A perfect Recall and Clear Stays Well Done Sasha.
Her second time in the ring today and she thoroughly enjoyed herself, once you’ve got her attention during the Heelwork this girl will soon move up the ladder and that “tight lead” just won’t happen.
5th MELISSA with Malcolm Peter - Mel’s Heel on Lead only lost her a couple of marks but unfortunately when the lead came off for Heel Free she thought a “steady stroll” was the order of the day. She knew exactly what to do on her recall, then forgot to sit which cost her a higher place today. Perfect Down Stay, Well Done Mel.
6th LEXI with Joan Meakin – Lexi obviously knew she’d done this really well the first time and decided, like Melissa, it was time for a stroll. Who can blame her - it was getting a lot warmer. Perfect Sit and Down Stay, Well Done Lexi.
FUTURE STARS – OBEDIENCE
1st ERNIE with Lucinda Hughes – This partnership was almost perfect which made my job so much harder. Small handler errors, which we all do in the ring, could not stop Ernie earning himself this well deserved first place. Well Done to You Both.
2nd REMY and Bruce Hellingsworth – The most perfect Advanced recall l have seen for a long time in any breed, you work so well together – an absolute joy to judge.
Again just handler error, on the retrieve, could not stop Remy being only 1 point behind Ernie. Well Done to Both of You.
Lynne Jones (Judge)

Double handling at the Garden Party!!
Hardworking Organiser Glynis, speechless (for once!) as the committee surprised her with an early 21st (!) birthday present.
AT THE END OF THE DAY...............
.........the Garden Party isn't really about winners and losers its much more about being there and taking part but we do have an overall winner for the three working disciplines of Obedience, Agility and Carting combined and above, at the end of a long but happy day, Club President Mr Frank Whitbread presents the trophy to a smiling Lucinda Hughes and Ernie (also smiling!)
So there we are, another great Bernese Family Day out over. Alot of organising, alot of hard work but alot of enjoyment generated.
As I write we don't know where next year's will be but if it is anything like as good as this year's you'd be mad to miss it!
