The Club's Christmas Show 2006

Business as usual

The usual venue at Henfield hosted the annual Bernese Opener to Christmas and the usual hard work of Sandra, Toni, Lena and all their team made sure the event was its usual success.

Best In Show winner 3½ year old dog Cornwellian Galadriel with handler Sandra Rothery, owner Gill Sadler-Smith and Judge Mark Wakeland

The show was the normal mix of Christmas welcome and bonhomie with Christmas fayre refreshments available in the hall. Christmas music and a dog and cart dispensing mince pies during the lunch break all added to the occasion. Judge Mark Wakeland (Bramikdel), appointed by a club member’s vote,  had drawn a very respectable entry of 94 dogs and despite the torrential rain outside there was a happy atmosphere in the hall. The show’s committee organisers have a really well motivated band of helpers and the club is very grateful to all of them for their fantastic contribution to the day. This event could not be the success it is without them. So whether you helped on setting up, raffle, shop, catering, carting or anything else the club thanks you very much.

Judges Report

It was a great pleasure to be invited to judge the open show, and I would like to thank all the exhibitors for their entries, and for turning out with their dogs in such horrendous weather! There were some lovely dogs and bitches present and I was particularly impressed with the presentation and condition of the exhibits shown – especially taking into account my previous comments. The atmosphere was good too: It may have been cold, wet and windy outside, but that didn’t detract from the warm and convivial atmosphere inside. Many thanks to all those who worked hard behind the scenes to make the show such a success.

Class 1 Minor Puppy Dog 4 entries, 2 present 1st Rumble’s Monalou Touch of Dutch to Glenbrienze. At just short of 8 months old, this was a substantial puppy dog with many fine qualities. He has a good strong head for one so young with a well defined stop and good dark, almond eyes. On the move he was well coordinated, perhaps with a slight tendency to run a little close at the rear, but in profile, looked good and strode out with vigor. (Best Puppy Dog). 2nd Avery’s Kyleburn Night Quintillion. At just 6mths, this boy has a nice shape with bone and substance. His head is still to develop and he looks a little shallow in the stop at the moment, but he is still young and otherwise creates a pleasing picture. Movement still a little uncoordinated, but once he got it together, he can actually move well.

Class 2 Puppy Dog  3 entries, 2 present 1st Cotton’s Collansues Special Dreamer. 11 mth old dog. Good masculine head and well marked. Good size dog with potential but perhaps just in that puppy stage at the moment of looking a little high at the rear – although this didn’t spoil the picture on the move and he moved freely and made a pleasing profile. 2nd Greens’ Pasturegreen Sos. 9mth old dog who perhaps didn't give of his best on the day. He had a tendency to pace - but once moving correctly has good drive on the move, although from the front he looked to throw his front right a little. He had a good coat and was well bodied - things may well start to fall into place for him once his movement gets coordinated and he gets a little more maturity.

Class 3 Junior Dog 2 entries 2 present 1st Harrington’s Ardenbridge Fordson. Well made dog, looking more mature than his 12mths would suggest. Good strong head and expression. In good coat and in nice condition - with strong musculature and substance, leading to solid, sound movement. 2nd Shaw’s Wildingwood Maximilian. Another strong junior dog, who at 14 mths just looks a touch long at present. Slightly loose eyes didn't detract from an otherwise pleasing head and expression. Movement not quite as coherent as 1.

Class 4 Yearling Dog 2 entries, 1 present  1st Allison’s Tickbern High flyer for Alisnobern. Good head and expression, level bite. Was just a tad tentative on the day but nothing to cause anygreat concern, and at 18mths has plenty of time. Good depth at front and forequarters strong, but when stood, hind feet tended to toe out just outside the parallel. Moved well though, keeping his topline and with a good outline.

Class 5  Novice Dog  4 entries, 2 present 1st Shaw’s Ridgewater Ebony Eyes. Strong, masculine head with well defined stop, nice expression, and good eyes. Strong chest and front. Perhaps didn’t show to the best of his ability on the day. 2nd Green’s Pasturegreen Sos.

Class 6   Graduate Dog  3 entries, all absent

Class 7   Post Graduate Dog   2 entries, 1 present 1st Munson’s Kernow Kuala Ranch. Quality dog with a good broad head, slightly round eyes but nevertheless a good masculine expression. Looked a little long, and moved a touch close at the rear, but otherwise had a gait depicting smoothness and fluidity giving the impression of drive and substance, particularly from the side.

Class 8  Limit Dog     6 entries, 4 present 1st Sadler-Smiths Cornwellian Galadriel. Not the biggest dog, but very well proportioned and looks spot-on in profile. Broad, typical Bernese head, with dark markings complemented with rich tan. Hands on, he lives up to the visual promise and is very well screwed together - if you’ll pardon the vernacular - with good conformation and ample substance. Moved with real drive and purpose. (Best Dog and B.I.S.) 2nd Avery’s Lujento Romeo-Romeo.Another superior exhibit, of good size and correct conformation with good angulation at rear. Good head and markings - moved well but not quite as aesthetically consistent as 1. 3rd Bernsteph Hugo Boss at Milenko. Nice dog with pleasing head and expression, with good stop and broad skull. Loses the odd mark for the quality of his bite but otherwise a well balanced and presented dog. Movement started a little erratically, but once settled moved reasonably well.

Class 9  Open Dog 4 entries, 2 present 1st Cotton’s Ch. Collansues Mexican Dream. A very good dog. Well made with good bone and substance, and good angulation. Moved well, free flowing but with the impression of grace and power. (Reserve Best Dog). 2nd Rumble’ Monalou Lucky Lucan for Glenbrienz. Substantial dog with typical Bernese head an d solid construction and in profuse coat - seemed a little unsure of himself today, but otherwise shown in good condition with profuse coat. Head perhaps better than 1, but could have moved better - underneath all that coat there’s maybe just a tiny bit too much of him.

Class 10 Veteran Dog  4 entries, 2 present 1st Owen's Glanzberg the Blade Runner. This was a close class and what a treat to judge the veteran boys. Unfortunately, I didn’t have 2 red rosettes so had to make a choice between these two lovely dogs. This 7 yr old was still in good condition and full of beans. Nice head and expression and had movement that could show some younger dogs a thing or two. 2nd Austen’s Halesbern Jim Bob. Another 7 yr old. Head perhaps not quite as strong as 1, but otherwise what substance! Plenty of bone and well constructed which showed in his movement - not the quickest round the ring but moved with a firmness and solidity and a pleasing sight nonetheless. A very close class.

Class 11 Veteran Bitch 6 entries, 4 present 1st Green’s Ch. Yndiana Du Bois Bernois at Waldershelf. Again, this was a, lovely class and a privilege to judge, and all were worthy exhibits. This bitch oozes quality however, and looks good from any angle. She has a lovely head and substance in abundance. Despite her age and solidity, she can still move well and went really well. 2nd Page’s Halesbern Extra Special. A smaller, lighter framed bitch than 1, but at 10½ yrs in remarkable condition and moves like a dog half her age, with free flowing, fluid movement. 3rd Gorbould’s Glanzberg Liberty. Another lovely bitch. 7 yrs old and of good size and conformation, and still in good condition. Movement perhaps not quite as strong as 1 & 2, but still good by any standard, even discounting her age.

Class 12 Minor Puppy Bitch  4 entries, 2 present 1st Miles’ Jaybiem Flashing the Pansy. 8 mth old bitch of excellent proportions and showed really well. Pretty head and expression and sound, well balanced movement, particularly considering her tender age. 2nd Szitkoviks Karchibach Peak a Boo. Pretty bitch with lovely temperament but at just 6mths a newcomer to the showring, and it showed a little, but promising nonetheless.

Class 13 Puppy Bitch 7 entries, 5 present 1st Barr’s Bernsteph Chloe. 10mth old bitch with nice head and well proportioned. Well settled in the ring and showed with considerable aplomb. Moved really well with good reach and displaying drive and vigour. 2nd Miles’ Jaybiem Flashing the Pansy. 3rd  Sutton’s Bernsteph J’adore Dior. Another nice bitch of good proportions, who just looks a little longer than 1 & 2 at the moment as she’s yet to fill out, but with a good head and nice feminine expression. Showed her exuberance in the ring making her movement a touch unsettled.

Class 14 Junior Bitch 9 entries,  7 present 1st Rothery’s Glamrock Spirit of Youth. Well proportioned bitch with good head, dark eyes and well defined stop. Solidly made with broad chest and chunky hindquarters (although I wouldn’t like to see her any heavier) and looked clean and crisp on the move, showing good outline and holding her topline. 2nd Miles’ Jaybiem Invu. Quality junior bitch who just lost out a little on her movement which although strong, just lacked the completeness and coordination of 1. Otherwise though a quality exhibit. 3rd Turner’s Bernfold Sassie Lassie. This class had quality in depth, and although placed third, the placing between the first three was so very close. She has an absolutely lovely head and expression and just lost out as she stands a little high at the rear which was just a minor distraction from an otherwise excellent bitch.

Class 15 Yearling Bitch 4 entries, all present 1st Malpass’ Hillbank Montana. Lovely young bitch with impressive head – nice dark, tight almond eyes, broad skull and expressive face. In excellent condition and moved very well with good drive and strength – made an impressive sight. 2nd Flanagan’s Collansues Cornish Cream. Another fine animal but not quite the head and expression of 1. Nevertheless showed good conformation, was in good condition and was strong on the move. 3rd Price’s Wildingwood Silver Nutmeg. Nice pretty bitch whose expression looked a little doleful – but still attractive - due to slightly loose eyes. Not quite the body of 1 & 2 but moved well with a pleasing gait.

Class 16 Novice Bitch 4 entries, 3 present 1st Barr’s Bernsteph Chloe. 2nd Sutton’s Bernsteph J’adore Dior 3rd Hardy’s Kernow Hot Property. A good size, substantial bitch – maybe a little too substantial here and there – which just tended to spoil her movement a little. However, she was otherwise a nice bitch with some good attributes.

Class 17  Graduate Bitch  4 entries, 2 present 1st Sutton’s Bernsteph J’adore Dior 2nd Soper’s Sapeville Dancing Queen. Quite a nice medium size bitch – a little reserved at first until we’d made friends!  Feminine face and good expression, moved freely but I would like to see a little more drive from the rear.

Class 18 Post Graduate Bitch 4 entries, 4 present 1st Green’s Quarts de Chaume V’t Rijkenspark at Waldershelf. Whilst she may not have had as much coat as some others in the class – neither did she have anything to hide and she has very good angulation and shape. This led almost inevitabley to excellent movement with real drive and energy. 2nd Toms’ Emberfay C’est Si Bon. Substantial bitch of good shape and nice head, but perhaps just missing a little breadth of skull. She moved well, but not with the smoothness of 1. 3rd Hellingsworth’s hilo Hattie at Carabaz. Generally a good quality bitch – eyes just a touch loose with took the edge an otherwise agreeable picture. She had a good construction and moved well.

Class 19 Limit Bitch 9 entries, 7 present 1st Nurse’s Wardleyhill the Isles Queen. Not the biggest bitch but everything in proportion. A case of quality over quantity! She had a lovely head and expression, was well made and in good condition both in coat and body. Moved easily and freely, and presented an excellent picture on the move. (Reserve best bitch) 2nd Turner’s Bernfold Miss Molly. A close call from 1, and another quality exhibit. She was well, marked, in good condition and moved soundly – but seemed to prefer the centre mat in the ring for some reason! 3rd Page’s Halesbern Smartie Pants. Just lost out on movement on the day which, although sound, was not quite of the quality of the first two. However, in other respects she presents a really good picture with a good head, and in shape has excellent angulation.

Class 20 Open Bitch  6 entries, 6 present 1st Sutton’s Ch. Bernparks Precious Ruby with Bernsteph. A quality bitch shown in top order. There’s not much else to say really, other than she was absolutely sound to go over and this reflected in her movement which whilst graceful and flowing also gave the impression of substance and power. (Reserve Best in Show, Best Bitch, Best opposite Sex) 2nd Rothery’s Monalou Express Delivery to Glamrock. Really nice bitch with an excellent head, good size and substance and good conformation. Moved with drive and made a really positive impression. 3rd Harrington’s Ardenbridge Goodtime Girl. Another quality bitch but she didn’t just show herself to her best advantage today and was a little laid back – particularly on the move where I would have liked a little more animation. This is a minor issue though and otherwise she has some fine qualities.
