The usual venue at Henfield hosted the annual Bernese Opener to Christmas and the usual hard work of Sandra, Toni, Lena, Mary and all their team made sure the event was its usual success.

Main Show Results and Judge's Critique

MINOR PUPPY DOG. (3, 0abs) 1st  Wells, Bernfold Woodiedoit – 7 months old. A very nice youngster. Head maturing nicely, correct eye and stop.  Good body shape, short coupled, well ribbed, correct angles fore and aft, bone to match.  Moved true with level top line and correct tail carriage, good temperament, well presented. 2nd  Hanscombe’s Mikabern Eternal Fantasy – 8 months old.  Another nice youngster.  Not as mature in body as first.  Nice head, correct eye and ear set, scissor bit, good body shape, correct angles.  Nice steady movement when settled. 3rd  Dudley’s Sanmarwell London Kid.

PUPPY DOG (4, 0ABS) 1st  Miles, Jaybiem Hedging Her Bets, 11 month dog, Medium size, masculine head, flat skull, good stop, correct eye and dentition.  Lovely body shape and substance. Short coupled, well ribbed, correct angles with bone to match.  Good positive movement. Presented beautifully. Best Puppy Dog & Best Puppy In Show. 2nd  Nightingales, Mainisila Ebony Dusk – 9 months old.  Nice type, medium size, head developing well, short coupled, good spring of rib, nice bone, level top line on the move which was steady and positive. 3rd  Biggins, Greybern Young Dude.

JUNIOR DOG (3, 0ABS) 1st  King & Bramble’s, Shirdees Jumping Jack – 15 months old dog.  What a lovely dog, good breed type.  Beautiful masculine head for such a youngster, broad flat skull, good stop, correct eye shape and colour, scissor bite.  Correct lay of shoulders and depth to chest.  Good body shape with substance, short coupled and correct angles.  Powerful rear action and positive front movement. Excellent bone and immaculately presented.  One to watch out for in the future.  Res Best Dog. 2nd  Miles, Jaybiem Hedging Her Bets. 3rd  Friend’s, Collansues Prince Charming.

YEARLING DOG (5, 1ABS) 1st  Rumble’s Monalou Touch of Dutch to Glenbrienz – 19 months old, medium size, excellent bone, nice masculine head, good eye, ear set and dentition.  Compact body, correct angles and level top line.  Another youngster to watch out for.  Movement nice and steady but a little loose on the front which needs to tighten. 2nd  Rowland’s, Bernehof Dark Chancer – Just 13 months old, Head developing nicely, good depth of chest, well ribbed, good body shape, nicely angulated.  Tended to pace on move but once settled moved well. 3rd  Green’s, Pasturegreen SOS.

NOVICE DOG (5, 0ABS) 1st  Mile’s Jaybiem Hedging Her Bets. 2nd  Avery’s Kyleburn Night Quintillion – 18 months, good head, broad flat skull and stop, correct ear set and almond shape eye, scissor bite.  Not as mature in body as 1 but a good shape. Nice level top line on the move which was positive. Good presentation. 3rd  Rowland’s, Bernehof Dark Chancer.

GRADUATE DOG (2, 0ABS) 1st  Butler’s Vellbern I Haven’t Done It – 22 months old, upper medium size, excellent masculine head, good body shape but would like more substance, but time is on his side.   Good angles, correct bone.  Nice front reach on the move.  Well presented. 2nd  Shaw’s Wildingwood Maximillion, 2 years old, smaller than lst, Skull needs to be broader but good stop, correct eye and ear set.  Nice body shape, well ribbed.  Good bone. Level top line on the move. Nicely presented.

LIMIT DOG (2, 0ABS)1st  Sadler-Smith’s, Cornwellian Galadriel at Pollingfold – 4 years old, Lovely mature dog of good breed type.   Masculine head, flat skull, almond shaped eye and correct ear set.  Good body shape and substance, correct angles fore and rear.  Short coupled.  Correct tail carriage and level top line.  Good positive movement. 2nd Harrington’s, Ardenbridge Fordson – 2 years old,  a very close decision between 1 and 2.  All the above applies to this dog.  Masculine head, good body shape, correct angles, excellent bone, level top line on the move.  Just tends to hold tail a bit proudly.  These two could change places on a different day.

OPEN DOG (5, 1ABS) 1st  Gorbold’s CH Dynamite Van’t Beertjeshof of Glanzberg.  3 and half years old.  Excellent breed type.  Have judged this dog before and has mature to perfection.  Excellent head shape, broad flat skull, short muzzle, melting almond shape eyes and correct ear set.  Excellent front and rear angles, well ribbed with good width to chest and level top line leading to a lovely round croup.  Good bone, cat like feet.  Impressive on the stand and even more so on the move.  Unfortunately lost out to the  bitch today for Best in Show due lack of coat condition. Best Dog and Res Best in Show. 2nd  Rumble’s, Monalou Lucky Lucan for Glenbrienz – 5 years old, slightly taller than first.  Another dog to like lot’s about.  Good breed type,  excellent head, and good body shape with substance, well ribbed with correct depth to chest, excellent bone and good rear angulation.  Good steady movement but a little close on rear. Good presentation and temperament. 3rd  Avery’s Lujento Romeo Romeo.

VETERAN BITCH (2, 1ABS) 1st  Graylings’, Ch Lujento Zeta Zuccini, Nearly 8 years old,  what’s not to like about this bitch.  Good breed type. Lovely feminine head, correct stop, eye and ear set, nicely marked.  Excellent bone and substance, correct angles, nice short hocks.  Strode out well at the front and held her top line on the move which was steady and positive.  Best Veteran and Res Best Bitch in Show.

MINOR PUPPY BITCH (4, 0ABS) 1st  Graylins, Lujento Lola Cherry Cola – Just six months old and what a sweetie.  The youngest in this class but well put together.  Lovely sweet head, melting eyes and correct ear set and dentition.  Good body shape, with level top line.  Has a lot of growing to do but won this class easily on movement.  Well presented. 2nd  Laurie’s, Kyleburn Night Reverie – 8 months old, nice youngster developing well.  More mature in body than 1 but movement needs to tighten up which will come in time.  Nice head, body shape and substance. Good bone and nice tight feet.  Good temperament. 3rd Price’s Welshbern Celtic Chelsea.

PUPPY BITCH (6, 1ABS) 1st  Harrington’s Ardenbridge Massie – 10 months old, a substantial puppy.  Good head maturing nicely, correct stop, eye and ear set.  Well bodied with good spring of rib.  Substantial bone all through.  Moved nice and steady keeping a level top line.  Good coat and well presented. 2nd  Green’s Malynncastle Ambriel at Pasturgreen – 9 months old, smaller than first, feminine head but needs to broaden.  Good width to chest, nice body shape, good movement and well presented. 3rd  Lamoon’s, Kyleburn Night Regatta.

JUNIOR BITCH (5, 0ABS) 1st   Forbes, Shirdees Pandoras Box – 16 month old, pretty head, melting expression, goody body and substance, correct angles, short coupled, good bone.  Was unsettled at first during in section but recovered second time of asking.  Good positive movement. 2nd  Hellingsworth’s, Shirdees Fantasy at Carabaz – 6 months old, litter sister to 1st.  Another lovely girl, good head, body shape and substance.  Just felt 1 had the edge on movement.  Well presented. 3rd  Turner’s Tangyachates Whisper to Me.

YEARLING BITCH (4, 0ABS) 1st  Szitkovics, Karchibach Peak a Boo – 18 months old.  Tall bitch, feminine head, good body shape, well ribbed but needs more substance.  Good level top line.  Won this class on movement. Out of coat at present, nice temperament. 2nd  Barr’s, Bernsteph Chloe – 23 months old, more substantial bitch than 1st.  Nice head, good body shape, good depth and width to chest.  Short coupled.  Nice steady movement but need to tighten up on front. 3rd  Miles’s Jaybiem Flashin the Pansy.

NOVICE BITCH (6, 0ABS) 1st  Szitkovics, Karchibach Peak A Boo. 2nd  Barr’s, Bernsteph Chloe. 3rd  Nunn’s, Tamarbern Brier Rose.

GRADUATE BITCH (3, 0AS) 1st  Gorbould’s, Glanzberg Uschi – 2 years old, good head, eye and ear set.  Correct angles front and rear.  Substantial bitch, short coupled, profuse coat, good movement, excellent bone.  Lovely temperament. 2nd  Barr’s Bernsteph Chloe. 3rd  Biggins, Tangyachates Uptown Girl from Greybern.

POST GRADUATE BITCH (3, 0ABS) 1st  Rothery’s, Glamrock Spirit of Youth – 2 years old.  Lovely bitch, good head, eye and ear set.  Good depth to chest, correct angles front and rear, short coupled, good positive movement.  Well presented. 2nd  Biggin’s, Collansues Cherry Bomb at Greybern – 4 years old, slightly taller than 1st.  Feminine head, nice markings, good size and substance.  Good steady movement, nicely presented. 3rd   Hardy’s, Kernow Hot Property.

LIMIT BITCH (3, 0ABS) 1st  Well’s, Bernfold Miss Molly – 3 years old.  Liked this bitch a lot.  Lovely breed type, feminine head, clear markings, good body shape, depth of chest and spring of ribs, correct angles, short coupled, excellent bone.  Unfortunately carrying a little too much substance as sides were rolling on the move which affected top line.  Correct tail carriage. Beautifully presented. 2nd  Green’s, Lintock Opium at Pasturegreen – 4 years old.  Another nice bitch, slightly longer than 1st.  Good head, plenty of stop.  Correct angles, well ribbed and correct bone, and nice steady movement.  Just preferred shape of 1.  Good presentation. 3rd  Benning’s, Holzern Trouble Double of Oakbern.

OPEN BITCH (3, 0ABS) 1st  Rothery’s, Monalou Express Delivery to Glamrock – 5 years old.  Substantial bitch, excellent breed type.  Beautiful feminine head, good stop, back skull, ear set.  Eye’s slightly light but does not detract.  Excellent angulation front and rear, well laid shoulders, correct depth and width to chest, lovely tight feet, short coupled leading to round croup, short hocks and excellent bone.  Movement was to behold, strong positive rear action, straight front.  Overall an excellent bitch, groomed and shown to perfection.  Best Bitch & Best in Show. 2nd  Turner’s, Tangyachates Sea Breeze – 4 years old.  Another lovely bitch, good strong but feminine head, correct eye and ear set.  Lovely body shape and substance, correct angles finished off with correct bone.  Lovely level top line on the move but not striding out as well as I have seen her before.  Nicely presented. 3rd  Hardy’s, Kernow Hot Property.

Class A Special Members Puppy Dog or Bitch

1st Grayling’s Lujento Lola Cherry Cola. Bitch, just 6 months, her first show. Good head, almond shaped eye and scissor bite. Nice length of neck into well-laid shoulders. Nice. Straight front. Good bone for age. Stood her ground well whilst being examined even though the weather was very noisy at the time. Moved well for a very young lady. 2nd Green’s Malyncastle Ambriel at Pasturegreen. 9 month bitch with good head and eye. Nice neck into well-laid shoulders. Good bone for age. Nice, straight front. Movement good for age. 3rd Biggins’ Greybern Young Dude.

Class B Special Members Junior Dog or Bitch
1st Hellingsworth’s Shirdees Fantasy at Carabaz.
16 month bitch with good head, eyes and nice, straight front. Good shoulders and nice, level topline. Angulation good both front and rear. Well-rounded croup. Moved very well. 2nd Blythe’s Tangyachates Water Lily. Another nice bitch with good head and front. Close coupled, level topline and good angulation. Very pretty bitch and good mover. Close between 1st and 2nd. 3rd Forbes’ Shirdees Pandoras Box.

Class C Special Members Post Graduate Dog or Bitch
1st Butlers’ Vellbern I Haven’t Done It.
22 months dog. Good head and bite, nice shaped eye. Good bone for age, level topline. Short-coupled, nicely rounded croup. Angulation good both front and rear. Moved well. 2nd Biggins’ Tangyachates Uptown Girl from Greybern. 2 ½ year bitch with good head and bite. Nice neck into well-laid shoulders. Level topline, angulation good front and rear. Movement quite good. 3rd Green’s Pasturegreen SOS.

Class D Special Members Open Dog or Bitch
1st Avery’s Lujento Romeo Romeo.
Good sized 5 year old dog. Beautiful head and good bite, nice tight eye. Good bone, level topline. Angulation good front and rear. Best mover, would have benefitted from a larger ring. 2nd Green’s Lintock Opium at Pasturegreen. 4 year old bitch with nice head and almond shaped eye. Good bone and angulation. Good lay of shoulder. Slightly long caste. Nicely rounded croup. Nice mover. 3rd Biggins’ Collansues Cherry Bomb at Greybern.
